The name of the magazine is “Vintage Crime”. The genre of my magazine is crime, serial killers and also murder cases. I named my magazine Vintage Crime as it is based on a true detective magazine from the early 60s that talks about different homicides that happened in the old days. Even Though not everyone will find interest in my magazine it is aimed at both genders. The ethnicity of my magazine is neutral because it will include people from different ethnicities. The age that my magazine will target will mostly be 17-55 years old. This is because as it is a crime magazine it will have a lot of ghastly writing and illustrations, which will not be suitable for a younger audience. There isn’t an age limit for my magazine but some older people will not find it as interesting and also find it more gruesome. The region that my magazine will target is mostly the USA because as it is based on an older true crime magazine from the United States, it will target a lot of my wanted audience. The social economic status will mostly be ABC1 due to the fact that the magazine won’t be that cheap but it will still be affordable to a lot of the population. It will cost 5.99 as it can still be affordable to people with the social economic status of C1. For my magazine’s name I wanted to give it a name that links to what I will be talking about. This is due to the fact that, when people look at my magazine and read my title they will know right away if they will be interested in the content inside of it. As we are in the modern age, by using the word “Vintage” in the title I tried to give the readers the feeling of an aesthetic that incorporates an antique and classical design. Furthermore, the words vintage and crime aren’t used together very often so it gives people a feeling of curiosity and oddity which is what I was trying to achieve. The target audience for my magazine links a lot to personal interests, this is because not everyone will be interested in crime and different murder cases. Vintage Crime meets what most magazines I researched do, this is because most of them talk about true crime and are from an older period of time. To do this I made my magazine look more vintage by adding the right images and text and also editing them to meet the standards I was aiming for.
I choose to meet conventional views to appear to a wider audience. The theory that works in my magazine is the reformer from Rubicam and Young. It lets people value their own ways of thinking and lets them have their own independent judgement on different articles that I wrote. Additionally, I did this by giving the magazine a more antique colour scheme. I added more warmer colours like, orange, brown, grey, red, by doing this it gave the effect of an older magazine written in an older period of time.. Also the outfits I gave my models to wear for my article look more from an antiquated period of time. The male model wore an older suit and the female model wore a black corset to highlight the change in time. This will appear to my target market since it has a theme that interests the readers. I also will be using the Blumer and Katz theories of Diversion and Surveillance. I am using Diversion since it’s a form of entertainment for people and also they might use magazines to relax and escape their surroundings. Additionally, I use Surveillance (Blumer and Katz) as well due to the fact that some people will be interested in gaining knowledge on different murder cases that happened in their country, also to just gain an understanding of the world around them. Vintage Crime will be a unique magazine, it will be mostly in the niche market since not a lot of people had the exact interest that my magazine talks about. Moreover, on the market there will be some crime magazines but not all of them have the vintage aesthetic I am going for. By doing this my magazine will be different so people will be curious to see what it talks about. As my magazine is from a niche market I will sell them only in book shops and not online. This is because while still making my product popular I don’t want everyone to get their hands on the magazines, this will create desperation from people which will make my magazine be more wanted.
The content that is covered in my magazine is about crimes, this also links to my article because it is written to be a murder case article. I choose to cover this in my magazine since it links to the genre I initially chose, and it also targets the people I want to be interested in Vintage Crime and also links to the target market that will be associated with the genre of crime. This will entice my audience due to the fact that it has a lot of interesting articles which were broadcasted all over the news so my magazine will have an insight on some popular murder cases and a lot more information than what other people have. This will make people want to read the magazine more and also will be more curious about it. Furthermore my magazine has very beautiful illustrations which catch the eye of the audience. Moreover, there are some problems in the industry surrounding my genre, the first one is that not a lot of people will be interested in crime, this is because it’s a genre not a lot of people are curious to find out more about. Additionally, another problem might be the target market surrounding my magazine. This is because as it is a crime magazine that talks about murder cases, it might be inappropriate for a younger audience as it has a lot of frightful and gruesome articles. According to my GEARS I used different models so that I will have a variation of genders and also people. I used three girls with different coloured hair and skin tone. For example, I used a girl that appears to be from Russia, a girl from London, a girl from Romania and to give gender variation I used a boy from Romania. This also links to my US audience as there are a lot of different ethnicities in America and people will be more interested in reading about females and males from different parts of the world. Due to the limitations of my school I couldn’t find a lot of models from different ethnicities. In my magazine I tried to incorporate both genders so that people can say my magazine has equal rights and I didn’t just use female models.
In my magazine I tried to meet all conventions, this is because I wanted to make it as realistic as possible so I took inspiration from a lot of older magazines that link to my genre. I did a lot of research through my magazine to meet all conventions. I gave my models clothes that look more vintage and that don’t show brands on them to show that the magazine is not trying to look modern. Also I made the background of my magazine look like an older paper by adding a different font and editing the background of my article and contents page to have a warmer tone and look like it was written on paper rather than made on a computer. Another convention I met was editing. I used editing to make my illustrations more warm coloured to give the illusion that they are from an older period of time. Additionally, I used text to give the same effect, by making my article seem older by adding different words than the ones that are spoken by people now. Vintage crime links to Stuart Hall’s Reception theory of dominant reading since it shares the magazine's code and accepts the preferred reading. It accepts it because it is like any other crime magazine out there even though I made it look more vintage, it still has the points a newer magazine would normally have. My magazine will most definitely sell in the market because it is very interesting and has a lot of knowledge that even people with other interests would be curious to find more about. I choose warmer colours and a more vintage style because in my opinion there aren’t a lot of magazines that look like mine, so while still trying to gain people’s attention and show that my magazine is different it still has the same content a modern crime magazine will have.
